The Most Solitary Beaches in the World, According to Reddit

Want to find a peaceful spot away from basically everyone else on Earth? Here are some real suggestions.

Maybe recent events have inspired you to get away from literally everyone and everything you know. Maybe the armchair political experts and the gloating Facebook posts and the videos of people walking around upper middle class neighborhoods in Handmaid’s Tale costumes have put you in a mental state where you cannot fathom talking to another person for the foreseeable future. Maybe you’re just an introvert looking for a little quiet. While I cannot broadly endorse isolating oneself for the long term, I can support carving out some time where you can shut out the noise and listen to nature.

On Reddit, people are seeking out places where they can just take in the soothing sounds of the ocean. Fortunately, people offered abundant recommendations for where to go for relative solitude. One recent thread in r/Travel, is dedicated to beaches on which one can be completely alone.

“I’ve been thinking recently that if there was a place I could go for like a week where I could stay in some type of small house or shack and just sit there and listen to/watch the ocean, look at the night sky, think about my life, maybe fish a little bit or something I would absolutely love it,” the Reddit post detailed.

Here are some of the best beaches to find real solitude, according to Reddit.

  • Western Australia beaches—the most beautiful beaches in the world and you’ll turn up to find less than 5 people at them.”
  • New Zealand. You will see no one in hundreds of kilometers of beaches.”
  • San Blas Islands, Panama.
  • “I’m in Ambalangoda, Sri Lanka and if you are 50 yards down the beach from the hotel no one is around. It’s bliss.”
  • Vieques, Puerto Rico.
  • St. John, USVI. Lots of lovely beaches and I’ve spent a lot of time on some that had few or no other people on them.”
  • “San Diego, south of Coronado there is a beach called Silver Strand. The next beach south is Imperial Beach. You can walk from Silver Strand south towards Imperial Beach along the shore and it is about 5 miles.”
  • Saipan!
  • Mozambique’s beaches are insanely beautiful and largely unspoiled.”
  • “I went to southern Goa, India, with nobody on those beaches at all. Hire a moped and putter up and down the coast line with only dogs and coconuts for company.”
  • “The beaches of Guanacaste, Costa Rica.”
  • “The Lost Coast region of Northern California.”
  • Eleuthera, Bahamas! World’s best beaches, affordable, less than an hour from the US, virtually empty. We saw maybe 3 people on the beaches the entire time we were there.”
  • Cumberland Island, Georgia.
